The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) is a federal government agency that protects the pension benefits of millions of American workers and retirees in defined benefit pension plans of the private sector under the terms of Title IV of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974, 29 U.S.C. § 1301-1461. PBGC engages in activities to preserve plans and protect participants by administering two separate insurance programs. The Single-employer plans generally are maintained by one employer or by a group of companies under common control. The Multiemployer plans generally are maintained by two or more unrelated companies under collective bargaining agreements with one or more unions.
