2021 Retiree Update

This page contains important information and useful tips for retirees receiving monthly pension benefits from PBGC. 

For our Sears customers who received a letter requesting completion of a Payee Information Form (Form 701), please know that your future payments will continue without interruption. If you have not already returned your form, please return the form to complete your payee verification at your earliest convenience.

If you choose to use MyPBA to complete your requested payee verification, you will be presented with questions upon logging in to MyPBA the first time. Once the questions are completed, no further action is needed. There is no online form to complete.

Once PBGC has received your payee verification, you will receive a letter of confirmation in the mail.

User Guide In 2021, PBGC began using the service to verify customer identities and provide you with an extra layer of security to protect your personal information. To assist our customers in setting up their accounts, we’ve posted a User Guide: “Creating a Account to Access MyPBA (PDF).”  The User Guide also includes a Troubleshooting Guide with common questions and answers.


Form 1099-R

Your IRS Form 1099-R will be mailed on January 31, 2022. Please allow time for delivery. Starting February 2, 2022, you will be able to download and print your IRS Form 1099-R from MyPBA.

What if PBGC Recently Began Paying my Pension Benefit?

If you received pension benefits from your pension plan and from PBGC in 2021, you will receive two Forms 1099-R:

  • Form 1099-R for payments made by your former plan administrator
  • Form 1099-R for payments made by State Street Bank (PBGC’s benefit payment bank)

Special note for Sears retirees. For 2021, all Sears Holdings payments and IRS Forms 1099-R will be issued by State Street Bank. Please visit Sears Holdings Pension Plans for up-to-date information.

Has your address changed?

You can help PBGC ensure timely delivery of your IRS Form 1099-R by letting us know immediately if we need to update your address.

If you have not moved since last year or if you already provided us with your new address, your 1099-R will be mailed.

Call Volumes at the Customer Contact Center

We apologize for the long waits many of you have experienced when calling our Customer Contact Center. As we ramp up our staffing and prepare for extra calls during tax season, please keep in mind the following tips:

  • The highest call volumes are on Mondays. The best time to call is Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Eastern Time. See the Contact Us page for more information. 
  • Create your new MyPBA account early, well before tax season. This will give you time to work out any issues related to creating your new account.
