The Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. 552a) regulates the way federal agencies collect, maintain, use and disseminate personal information. The law protects records that can be retrieved by personal identifiers such as a name, social security number, or other identifying number or symbol.

A System of Records Notice informs the public of the existence of a system of records and describes the type of information that an agency will be collecting, who will be collecting the information, how it will be safeguarded, the purpose for collecting such information.
A Privacy Impact Assessment, or PIA, is an analysis of the privacy impact of any substantially revised or new Information Technology System.
The Privacy Act permits you to access records about yourself that are maintained by PBGC in a Privacy Act system of records. In addition, you may request that incorrect or incomplete information be changed or amended.
