United Airlines – Benefit Determination Status (Updated as of 08/31/2011)
Since June of 2005 when PBGC assumed responsibility for the United Airlines pension plans, almost 125,000 out of 126,000 participants / retirees have received Benefit Determination Letters. PBGC hoped to issue the remaining 1,300 letters next month. However, we are currently performing asset valuations and recalculating the asset allocation for the United pension plans and this may cause final benefits to change slightly. We are waiting for this process to be finished before issuing the remaining letters. There may be small changes to the benefits of some participants who have already received their Benefit Determination Letters as well. For more information on the asset valuations and allocation please see PBGC’s FAQ: Review of the United Plans' Assets.
The total number of BDs remaining to be issued (approximately 1,300) is distributed as follows:
- Pilots Fixed Benefit Income Plan 400
- Ground Employees' Retirement Plan 300
- Management, Administrative & Public Contact (MAPC)
Pension Plan 600
Benefit Determination Status (Updated as of 12/15/2010)

We have completed our calculations for the Pilots plan and issued over 10,000 of the remaining BDLs for this plan. There are about 2,000 more to be issued.
The total number of BDLs remaining to be issued is approximately 5,100 (distributed among the 3 plans listed below).
- Pilots Fixed Benefit Income Plan
- Ground Employees' Retirement Plan
- Management, Administrative & Public Contact (MAPC) Pension Plan
We expect to have all BDLs completed by September 30, 2011.
Benefit Determination Status (as of 03/31/2010)
PBGC has issued over 95,000 final benefit determination letters (BDLs) to participants and beneficiaries in the United Airlines pension plans. We plan to issue an additional 20,000 by September 30, 2010, and most of the remaining BDLs by the end of the year.
As of the end of March 2010, we have issued almost all BDLs for the Flight Attendants plan and over 80% of the BDLs for the Ground Employees plan and the Management, Administrative and Public Contact plan. We will be completing our calculations for the Pilots plan soon, and will begin issuing the remaining approximately 12,000 BDLs in the coming months.
If you have not yet received your final benefit determination, please understand that we are working diligently to get it to you as soon as possible. Please be aware that individual factors such as Qualified Domestic Relations Orders may make your situation more complicated, and your benefit determination may take longer than those of other workers or retirees in your plan. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we regret any inconvenience the delay may cause.
