PBGC Premium Payers Get Toll-free Help Line Along With 1999 Forms

Continuing efforts to improve customer service, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) today established a new toll-free number - 1-800-736-2444 -- for plan administrators and pension professionals who have questions about premiums, plan terminations and plan coverage.

"The innovation, intended to aid communications with premium payers, is a result of our continuing efforts to provide premier customer service," said N. Anthony Calhoun, PBGC Deputy Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer.

The new service begins as PBGC mails pension plan administrators the forms (Form 1 and Schedule A) and instructions for filing premiums for plan years beginning in 1999.

This action follows PBGC's announcement last month that extended the premium Form 1 filing due dates to coincide with the extended filing due dates for the Form 5500. For example, a calendar year plan's final filing due date has been moved to October 15, 1999 (rather than September 15). This change came in response to premium payer requests for simplified filing procedures.

PBGC is a federal corporation created under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 to guarantee payment of basic pension benefits earned by some 42 million American workers and retirees participating in about 45,000 private-sector defined benefit pension plans. The agency receives no funds from general tax revenues. Operations are financed largely by insurance premiums paid by companies that sponsor pension plans and investment returns.
