Murtaugh Named Communications Chief at PBGC

March 07, 2008

WASHINGTON-The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) today announced the appointment of Timothy M. Murtaugh as director of communications and public affairs.

Murtaugh joins the PBGC after nearly a decade of service in communications leadership positions in Virginia government and politics, most notably as communications director for the Virginia Attorney General for three years. In addition, he filled senior communications and management roles for the election campaigns of Virginia candidates at the state and federal levels. He has also served as director of communications for the Republican Party of Virginia and deputy director of communications for the Republican National Committee.

Prior to his career in politics Murtaugh was a journalist, working as a reporter, news anchor and state capitol bureau chief for radio and television outlets in Fredericksburg and Charlottesville, Va.

"Tim brings impressive experience in journalism and in developing and managing a variety of communications programs in the realm of public issues and policy," said PBGC Director Charles E.F. Millard. "Our agency's public affairs and outreach programs are key to keeping American workers and their families informed about pension insurance and the important protection it provides. We're fortunate to have Tim on board to strengthen those efforts."

Murtaugh, 38, holds a bachelor of arts degree in broadcast journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia. A native of Ridley Twp., Pa., he resides in Arlington, Va.

The PBGC is a federal corporation created under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. It currently guarantees payment of basic pension benefits earned by 44 million American workers and retirees participating in over 30,000 private-sector defined benefit pension plans. The agency receives no funds from general tax revenues. Operations are financed largely by insurance premiums paid by companies that sponsor pension plans and by investment returns.
