• The total number of single-employer plans insured by PBGC has declined substantially in the past nineteen years.

• In 2005, PBGC insured about 29,600 single-employer defined benefit plans, down from an all-time high of 112,000 plans in 1985.

• This decline primarily refl ects a large number of terminations among small plans.
